Aniston the year Rachel went through pregnancy, culminating in a 48-hour labor in the aptly named "The One Where Rachel Has a Baby" (season eight) that's at once hilarious and tearful. Sadly, the series-finale birth of Monica (Courteney Cox) and Chandler's (Matthew Perry) adopted twins is not included, but should have been.

Watching them back to back, it's funny seeing how much the characters' maturities have evolved (not to mention their hairstyles). However, the disc adds nothing new in addition to the extra footage never aired on TV and producer commentary found on existing Friends DVDs. If you already own several season boxed sets, these repackaged highlight reels are completely redundant. But if you're enough of a fan to want some of the best episodes of the show's 10-year run, this is not a bad place to start. --Ellen A. Were it truly postmodern, it would not work so! well--i nstead, the Sprechers have given us dark but funny commentary on working life as a temp. The clean, straight lines of cinematographer Jim Denault's aesthetic bolster the woman-against-the-world motif of the meaningless pursuit of full-time employment. Why four intelligent, capable women languish in perpetual boredom looking for this unfulfilling nirvana is not at issue, but it is this unquestioned conformity to tradition that frustrates the audience while letting us laugh at what is and is not happening.

Toni Collette's (Muriel's Wedding) portrayal of Iris is sharp: a shy, mousy, somewhat insecure twentysomething provides interior monologue, both through her voice-over commentary and the notebook diary she religiously keeps, and evolves over a year of temping at a credit company--but it is difficult to explain what she evolves into. She gains an understanding of friendship and betrayal, but at the cost of not even the least sentimentality. She asserts her p! ersonal desires for career that are in conflict with those of the working world and her father, but without reaching true fulfillment. She outgrows her don't-notice-me haircut to become an assertive, self-confident person, yet suffers intensely and silently when a handsome coworker doesn't recognize her on the street.

Strong performances from both Parker Posey and Lisa Kudrow (who since Friends and the witty Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion seems to be suffering increasingly from stereotyping) give Collette a solid surface off of which she bounces her quiet, psychological role to great satisfaction. --Erik Macki

In the context of a civil society and its seep complexities, large organized forces (read news channels, political parties and industrial czars) are not just involved in a fight with each other, but more importantly and frighteningly. They are battling a war within themselves and this especially true of news channels. Making news is not the easiest thing in the world. So the next best thing obviously would be to make anything and everything appear to be news. In a free economy system where there is so much competition the media by default is lost in its purpose.

Ingredients
2 13.8-ounce cans premade pizza crust dough
4 tablespoons oliv! e oil
2 teaspoons minced garlic
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese (about 8 ounces)
2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese (about 8 ounces)
1 bell pepper, cored, seeded, and cut into strips
1 red onion, sliced vertically
3 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves, grilled and diced
6 slices bacon, cooked until crisp and crumbled

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Roll the pizza dough out and fit onto two 15-inch pizza pans. Drizzle 1 tablespoon of olive oil and 1 teaspoon of garlic on each pizza crust, followed by 1/2 cup each of the mozzarella cheese and 1/2 cup of the Cheddar cheese. Scatter half of the bell pepper, sliced onion, chicken, and bacon on top of the cheeses. Sprinkle another 1/2 cup mozzarella cheese and 1/2 cup Cheddar cheese over each pizza and drizzle each pizza with 1 tablespoon more of olive oil. Bake the pizzas for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the crusts are lightly browned. Slice each pizza into 8 pieces.

Dirt drops A-list names (Clooney, Britney),! but for a series set in Hollywood, it's light on actual celebrities (director David Fincher and a self-deprecating Christopher Knight and Adrienne Curry appear as themselves). Instead, we get unconvincing fictional celebrities such as wash-out actor Holt McLaren (Josh Stewart), who gets his shot at superstardom by making the same kind of pact with Lucy that John Cassavetes made with the coven in Rosemary's Baby. Just one scoop begins a downward spiral for his sitcom-actress girlfriend (Laura Allen) and her best friend, an actress with an ill-timed pregnancy (Shannyn Sossamon). Also getting down and dirty are Rick Fox as a compromised basketball superstar, Wayne Brady as a cultured thug, and, in the season finale, Jennifer Aniston as Lucy's rival (and then some, although their much-hyped onscreen kiss is really much ado about nothing). If the two actors, who are very good, are meant to carry equal weight, Gosling has the more difficult task. Based on a short story, this time Jonathan Raymond’s "Train Choir," Wen! dy and Lucy’s dialogue is a sparse spattering amongst long, languid scenes that moodily portray a young woman, Wendy (Michelle Williams), suffering economic crisis and road trip malaise on her way to work Alaskan fishing boats. The bulk of the story takes place in Portland, where her Honda breaks down and she must engage the local mechanic (Will Patton) and Walgreen’s security guard (Wally Dalton) for honest advice and for help finding her dog, Lucy, who disappears during one of Wendy’s disasters. Wendy and Lucy would aptly be titled Wendy’s Bad Day, as problems pile up due to one main misstep. Williams does a great job portraying a woman who is semi self-sufficient but clueless in the art of survival. As the film speaks to many young people who have been broke and stranded, one will inevitably wonder why Wendy makes the unwise choices she does, for example sleeping in a dangerous area along a train track instead of finding a safer campground, or wanderin! g the streets looking for her lost pooch in lieu of hunkering ! down for a temporary part-time job. The film straddles the line between social realism and fantasy in this regard, provoking frustration during certain plot twists.
